Electro-rock quintet shake the Louie to its foundations.

Bristol electro-rock quintet Medallist return to the live scene after a brief yet noticeable absence in recent weeks, having taken time out to concentrate on writing new material for their forthcoming debut album, expected later this year. Newly signed to Gut records at the tail end of 2007, expectations are high and it is widely thought that Medallist are the band to breakout and put Bristol back on the map, ensuring the Massive Attack and Portishead hangover is put to bed at long last.

Taking to the stage at a packed-out Louisiana the band are tight, confident and clearly delighted to be playing live once again; “It’s good to be back” proclaims front man Sparky, before launching into an already firm live favourite ‘Brothers and Sisters’. The new material goes down well, with myspace track ‘Everything We See’ and ‘One in a Million’ garnering particular acclaim. The best, however, was saved until last; finishing their all too brief thirty-minute set with ‘Electronic Romance’ and ‘The Music’ the lads were in their element, with thumping rhythmic bass and beat-perfect percussion keeping the fizzing synth and howling guitars in order, shaking the venue to it’s very foundations. The crowd, to keep it short, were euphoric.

Medallist are making a serious name for themselves in and around Bristol, and on the strength of this performance their reputation is duly deserved. The band is planning a nationwide tour later in the year so keep an eye out. With a few little tweaks that will come with experience, Medallist will be essential listening in 2008.
