Making Rock N' Roll Look Beautiful
"I am the most beautiful person you will ever see!" Justin Tranter, the lead singer of New York's Semi Precious Weapons and part time jewellery designer, claims during their packed Boogaloo gig in London. Whether or not you believe Justin's statement, one of my female friends did, Semi Precious Weapons let London know they had arrived by kicking off their first ever gig outside of America with their self titled track 'Semi Precious Weapons'. With the opening line "I can't pay the rent but I'm fucking gorgeous" you can spot a theme developing but thankfully this is a band that can pull it off.
Even with no stage the band gave everything, the people at the front were often in danger of going home with imprints of either Cole's bass or Justin's delightful grey high heeled boots (my friend was very jealous) with his high kicks.
Playing most of the songs from their debut album "We Love You" with songs like the explosive 'Magnetic Baby' and the classic glam style 'Rock n Roll Never Looked So Beautiful' the 45 minute set flew past. Some of the lyrics are not for the faint hearted but this is rock and it never should be. Semi Precious Weapons blend of Glam Rock and Roll is helping them grow very quickly back home and even Alan McGee was quoted as saying "Most important band in America! Bringing Rock and Roll back from the dead!" in his Guardian column very recently.
With the legendary BP Fallon managing them, Semi Precious Weapons are bringing glam rock back into fashion. Most beautiful person in the world? It is possibly true. I left in love with them.
