Processed Stone Roses Beats?
Since I’m not generally a sufferer of déjà vu, I’m going to draw a hasty assumption that I’ve heard something suspiciously similar to this before. The rhythm is familiar, the effects are familiar, the vocals are familiar…
…Hang on a second: it’s ‘Fool’s Gold’ by the Stone bloody Roses!
So I’m left in a quandary, because ‘Fool’s Gold’ is an excellent song – one of the finest pieces the ‘Roses ever produced. Thus, ‘next-big-thing’ Kasabian’s new single ‘Processed Beats’ is similarly catchy, similarly foot-tappingly irresistible. It’s a strong song – there’s not a doubt in my mind about that. But it just seems to be regurgitated, and slightly modernised, Stone Roses material, to the point of being cringingly comparable.
B-side ‘The Nightworker’s’ is more respectably original, boasting a far rougher, grittier sound than the single. It’s probably a better result – certainly more unique and recognisably Kasabian. This is the style they should be heading for: a truly interesting style, and one that should make more and more people take notice. The A-side’s okay, but ‘The Nightworker’s’ shows Kasabian’s talent more accurately.
