The Hussy's - We Expected/Please Don't Call Me At Home

Do you remember those 'Vanish' adverts from when you were a kid? They were so tacky and cringe worthy that you couldn't help but be entertained. Well ever since they left, my life has been rather vacuous. Enter 'The Hussy's' with their double a-side: 'We Expected/Please don't call me at home'.

I listened to this at first and prepared a piece of writing the authors of hate speech would struggle to stomach. But as a rule I always give pieces of music a fair chance before I pass final judgement. Don't expect to be wowed by 'The Hussy's', you'll be left horribly disappointed. But, they will entertain you.

'We Expected' is an awfully cheesy track telling of the perils of under achievement and set to generic indie pop guitars. Yet, there is something incredibly endearing about the song. Singer Fili (apparently Scotland's answer to Cerys Matthews) shows no real vocal talent or lyrical flair, but she makes the song work with vocals that seem to have come from late 90's girly pop. I like it.

'Please don't call me at home' is a far stronger song. With obvious ska influences, you just want to jump up and dance. It belongs in an 'alls well that ends well' scene in a Hollywood movie. There's nothing more I can say about it than that. It's fun, it has no pretence, it's just there as you find it.

The Guardian described 'The Hussy's as "Sunny Glaswegian indie pop" and they're right. They're a lot of fun if you take them like that. They certainly won't change your life, but at least you'll have a giggle and a dance listening to them.
