Ah, problem. The thing is, 'Four Kicks' will have you jumping around your room like a raving maniac, air guitaring like there's no tomorrow - and yet I simply can't award it more than 8/13. It's fantastic, and yet it's poor. Let's explain.
It's a raucous, manic, energetic rock and roll track. It's the classic formula: vocals answered by a slightly distorted guitar motif that will make you headbang like a lunatic. The chorus steps down a gear and up a fourth, into a rhythmically excellent voice-lead interlude, before powering back into the main guitar riff. There's a rather 'rawk' solo in there, too.
Bad news is this. It's the classic formula: vocals answered by a slightly distorted guitar motif that will make you headbang like a lunatic. See where we're going with this?
Take that formula and apply it to a song fitting under the heading of 'rock and roll' - chances are, it'll fit pretty much like a glove. 'Four Kicks' is a great tune to listen to, but in the scheme of things, it's simply nowhere near original enough to stand out.
Still. It's a good riff, isn't it?
