Kat Flint - Christopher You’re A Soldier Now

Kat Flint displays a powerful Scottish vocal talent, put to the work of protest songs. However, this is not a protest about war, but about her younger brother, and it never actually says anything negative. Nonetheless, in the all-too-positive lyrics • ‘everybody loves a man in uniform!’ • and the irrepressible trumpet fanfares you can catch a deadly sense of concealed irony. I can only feel for the younger brother on the receiving end of that.

The acoustic guitar and tramp of military boots both work well, tempting you to nod along. Perhaps the only bad thing about the song is its abrupt ending, leaving you • and apparently the trumpet • mid-nod, feeling a bit of a fool. The progression from Kat and the guitar to the composite sound of guitar/trumpet/boots and vocals doesn’t work as well as it could, tending to drown out the more important elements. All in all though, a good song.
