Crimes of the Future • Screen Villains
Opening with a cute little string into, before proceeding to the serious business of indie guitar via gunshots, ‘Screen Villains’ is a 4 minutes and 10 seconds of generic acceptable indie anthem. Let’s not go according it honours beyond its due, but it does work well in places.
The production is not quite perfect; the presence of the Only Ones and Elastica collaborator Trevor Heaton being noticeable particularly in his recognisable vocal editing. However, the melody itself is not quite right. A fuzzy distorted guitar underlies the whole track, and while the bass and treble seem to be capably occupied, the middle ground lies vacant for at least the first third of the track.
All in all, keen an ear out for the track and particularly the band. They may yet do great things. For the time being though, this offering displays some good qualities, but • at the risk of endangering those great vocals • could use a bit more attention in the melody.
