Biography

Our band was forged in York in 2001 after several individual attempts at “the big time” had ended in various stages of carnage and missed opportunities. Owen and Stuart, who had known each other for a very long time and had a mutual respect for each other's ability, decided to join forces and conquer the world.

Owen had previously impressed Stuart when he was refused entry to one of Stuart's shows after splitting his head open due to excessive vodka consumption, and ended up in hospital needing several stitches. After playing a few acoustic shows together in York, Matt and Thom were recruited to finalise the line-up.

In the summer of 2002 we weren’t really sure what do next. So we sent 100 copies of a demo tape to every radio station, record company, and police station in the country in the hope that something would happen. We didn’t have to wait long, as that week 2 separate DJs on the BBC played the demo. Soon after that we had dozens of phone conversations with lots of people pretending to be interested in our band. This ended up with the band playing at In The City 2002 and then finishing the night vomiting onto members of the music industry from the balcony of a swanky restaurant after accepting some drugs off a mental patient.

After the initial panic that we thought we had created only one company had the balls to treat us as human beings and it is with them that we ended up signing our record deal. We also discovered that being on an indie label IS all it’s cracked up to be. It turns out YOU CAN record what you like and you DON’T have to sign a record deal as thick as the bible. Fancy that eh? In the past two years we managed to record our first album at real world studios with producer Steve Osborne (U2/New Order), although I think the experience took more of a toll on him as during the end of recording he had started smoking 30 cigarettes a day and had lost the power of speech. We also were lucky enough to work with Head, and Matthew Ollivier. Both amazing producers, and both legends!

Since signing our deal, we got to play with some amazing bands like, The Icarus Line, Silverchair, The Bronx, Korn, Idlewild, The Libertines, Funeral for a Friend, and of course our homeboys Placebo, who have become like our eccentric uncles. We reckon we must have played about 100 shows in total ranging from playing to 11,000 capacity Roman stadiums, to twenty five toddlers in a park, most of those shows without a record deal and living off scraps, and suppressing our hunger with drugs. read less
