Psychedelic 70s cover from distinctly average singer-songwriter...
If the name sounds familiar, you might recognise Daniel Wylie as the lead-singer of sun-drenched Indie pop group, Cosmic Rough Riders. After an amicable departure from the group in 2002, Wylie wasted no time before beginning work on his solo album, 'Ramshackle Beauty', which was released to outstanding critical acclaim in 2004.
And now, the Glasgow-born singer-songwriter returns with the new single and cover of classic Wishbone Ash track, 'Time Was'. With its winding guitar riff and a trippy, psychedelic feel, the 70s America sound of this song combines with a spaced-out melody to make it the perfect soundtrack to lazy summer days. For any big Wylie fans it might also be worth pointing out that the version of 'Time Was' here is an exclusive single version only, and different to the mix that will appear on the album.
'Walking in my Shoes' is a rather disappointing song; simplistic and predictable, with a melody that is more irritable than catchy. Thankfully, 'Where the Time Goes' makes up for it, a slightly repetitive yet enjoyable song, much more original and intelligent than 'Walking in my Shoes' with a jangly pop melody.
Overall, although 'Time Was' is quite a likeable summer track, the other two songs on the single feel distinctly average. However, if you're a fan of the Californian sound of Cosmic Rough Riders or liked Wylie's debut album you're likely to love this single too. The album 'Postcards' is expected for release on 4th July. Meanwhile, Wylie is already back in the studio working on the follow up, 'The High Cost of Happiness', expected in January.
