So what are you listening to?
Leading with an axe driven sound, The Kinison kick off with ‘The Farm & The Girls’- fast paced drumming supporting and being supported by a good bass line whilst being held together by vocals that are full of passion. Unfortunately things stray away from this good start with ‘Oh Boy That Girl Can Move’, a number which never quite makes a connection with either a rock or metal sound. Fortunately they bring it back with ‘You’ll Never Guess Who Died’ and take it further in ‘Lake Calmern Is Full Now’ which displays brilliant co-ordination between the band; the soft background sound works well as a counterpoint to the harsher vox.
Picking up the pace again in ‘American Collectibles’ pushes the rock sound more and it works so well, but it’s a pity that the band don’t throw themselves into this sound totally as they do here. The same can be said for ‘I have Something To say’- another number which suffers from being disjointed, and frankly The Kinison are capable of so much more than this.
Upbeat with a good rhythm, ‘Every Genius Has Their Hang Ups’ begins with a breathless vocal sound, again counter pointed by a softer background depth- this though, by no means takes away the harsh edge to this number. With ‘Wild & Crazy Kids’ they give a fuller sound that really makes this one a tight number- clever mixing of music and vox. That dip and sweat make this number what it is.
‘XOXOXO’ and ‘No Talk’ are both ones that have a hard time finding a friendly genre, but are kept together, again by excellent drum and bass work. They work together so don’t dismiss them, especially in ‘No Talk’ as it catches you out in the end witch an unexpected drift into phsycadelia that gets shot to pieces by sudden bullets of hard vocals and guitar work.
