Who hasn’t had that all alone in the world feeling?

This song is a pleasure for all, with enough pain in the lyrics and enough twitch in the music it’s a treat for all. There is a menacing melancholy to Billy Jo’s voice that is matchless and when added to the way all three interpret their music it proves that pathos and teenage angst still rule. Perhaps slightly more ‘arty’ than their earlier work, but hey! This is Green Day and they have earned the right to play it as they see it. Mike Dirnt wields his axe with passion whilst Tré Cool’s drumming has that pinpoint accuracy of a guided missile.

The two tracks that make up the rest of this CD are both live recordings. Firstly, for anyone tempted to think that ‘American Idiot’ is just there to fill out the CD, LISTEN TO IT! Any band of this calibre are going to be good live but Green Day have that ability to give you just that bit more. On this track in particular it is as if time stood still and they are as fresh and raw as in their early days. With ‘She’s A Rebel’ they give another magnificent display of the bands ability to make a very simple sound translate into a next twisting, body hurling, crowd surfing pleasure. Axe thrashing, stick smashing, sharp vox.

Welcome back Green Day we never realised how much we missed you!

Emily Warner.
