A pretty sweet set...
Sugarcult. You either love them or you hate them. Granted, you probably hate them, knowing the disdain most of the music world has for the constant outpouring of trashy disposable American Punk bands, but I'm seriously impressed by these guys' ability to present their material.
Tonight Sugarcult piled on through works both new and old, stopping off on the way to play the hits - "Bouncing Off The Walls"; "Stuck In America", the song that they open the set with, laying the kerosene to later set the crowd alight; and "Pretty Girl" - as well as delighting fans with the new albums' finest.
They jump perfectly in time at appropriate points in the song - cheap, sure, but hey, it's funnier when bands try to pull it off but fail miserably. It's all a part of the band's "stage show", which is minimal, but you've gotta do your best with the materials you have: ie. a £5 budget no doubt. So, with toilet breaks for the guitarist over, provoking a nice interlude where the singer Tim connects with the audience and tells them plenty of anecdotes concerning Scotland, the band launch into their next song. The guitarist first of all takes something from a crowd member to use as a guitar slide, and then hands the unnamed object back and proceeds to use a mic stand instead as the slide. Sure, all this may not stand up in the world of "proper" music, but hey, they showed the crowd a good time, and that's what they're all there for, crowd and band alike... a decent performance by the cult of Sugarcult.
